Not happy with Hopper/sling and Dish. Need advice on what to do next.

A few weeks ago I called customer service because I wanted HD on tv2. I had a 722K feeding 2 tvs, HD in 1 room, SD in the other. My plan was to buy a 211K for the second room, hook it up myself and be done with it.

The rep I spoke to wasn't really listening, she was agressive/pushy and wanted to upsell me to a hopper/sling because I was a "preferred customer". At first I was hesitant because I didn't want to start a 2 year commitment and just needed a 211k. She assured me a couple more times that there would be no commitment and no installation fee so I cautiously accepted her "deal". A day after installation I got an email saying I had just agreed to a new 2 year commitment. I was not happy to say the least. So the next couple of days I had to waste my time speaking with different reps to waive the commitment.

After using the hopper for a few weeks I can't say that I like it. The hopper with sling is slow and cumbersome. Too many clicks to do want you want. My 722k was faster and easier to use than this peice of junk!

The majority of the problem is with the user interface. My 75 year old mother lives with me. She's had the legacy UI from Dish for over 8 years. She's struggling to use this new system(too confusing for her) and isn't happy with the changes. I should have stuck with my original idea of adding a 211k.

My question is, what options do I have at this point? Can I lease or purchase a 722K/211k and have it reinstalled? Can you send back my 722k so I could reinstall it myself? Or should I just cancel Dish and use an OTA antenna because most of our programming we watch is from our local broadcasters anyway.

Hello richeydog. I would be happy to take a look at your account and see what options are available to get you set up wit ha 722K and 211 receiver. Please send us a Private Message so we can access your account and look into that together.  https://communities.dish.com/t5/Communities-101/How-To-Send-a-Private-Message/td-p/15039

A little histry of the Hopper:

First Hopper (H1), then Hopper with Sling (H2), the Hopper 3 (H3).

Each a bit faster and more capable than the ones before it, the H3 was drasticly quicker then those before it but there was a time they were all acceptable devices.

Dish made the H3 user interface pretty fancy and the H3 had the power to run it well.  The H1 and H2 though not as fast and missing many whistles and bells were still viable alternatives.

Then Dish decided to put that more sophisticated H3 interface on the H1 and H2 even though they were severly lacking in processor power to run it.  When they rolled it out my H2 became a slow motion exercise in frustration each time I tryed to do anything with it also getting all kinds of errors I'd never seen or heard of before, and I can't even imagine what users with the H1 experienced.

The best analagy I heard was it was like trying to run windows XP on an old AT class 286 PC.

I eventually had my H2 replaced with an H3 and while it is not perfect the improvement was drastic.  I'm still using the H3 with one wired Joey and while not perfect it is pretty darned good.

For the life of me I cannot understand them now shipping out any Hoppers other than H3's anymore.  I'd think H1s or H2s will do nothing but send customers elsewhere.

Discuss your options with Dish!

Thank you Tommy for the summary. I agree with everything you said. Unfortunately, Dish only wants to replace the Hopper w/sling with another hopper w/sling. They believe that my receiver has an isolated problem and sending another one will magically fix it.

Too bad because I really like Dish and their DVR.

I just signed up for the same thing and now I am worried.  I don't like that two year commitment either.  Were you able to get the commitment waved?  How?

I spoke with dish employees from the facebook team and they gave me a number to their Senior Resolution Specialist. That's how i got it waived.

How long have you been with dish?

What reciever did you upgrade from?

I want to update my situation. About a month ago I spoke with someone from executive customer service about my situation. After a friendly conversation they agreed to exchange my hopper 2 with a hopper 3. While not perfect, it is incredibly fast...and I no longer have to worry about recording conflicts since it has 16 tuners. Get a hopper 3 if you can.

I am upgrading from a regular (not interent) receiver to the Hopper.  I have been with Dish for at least ten years.
