Image size of OTA is wrong

I use my OTA tuner all the time. But one thing that has annoyed me is the image size. It is zoomed in too much when OTA is showing a 4:3 source, and cuts the top and bottom of the picture off. Not seriously a problem except in two cases, one I find critical:
1. When an OTA channel has hard captions included (like for foreign films) the captions are often not fully visible.
2. But more critical is the Emergency Alert System. Three days ago we received a local alert. The sound was heard on the local channel, and a green banner appeared in the image. However, the top that actually contained the scrolling text was not visible. This is a SERIOUS problem if there is a real local emergency.

Yes, I pressed the Format button. While it pops up (in the proper place at the bottom) the Display Format menu, the selections change nothing. This is as OTA has always been, you cannot change the image format for stretch, zoom, etc. They do nothing.

And yes, I tried the Tv's setting menu as well. It made little difference but note the image us properly aligned for Dish channels just fine.

The other indication that it's not quite right is the channel logo is cut off half way in the bottom right.

This is not every channel. Only, it seems, OTA channels broadcast in 4:3.

As an alternate test, I tried tuning the offending channels directly OTA with my TV and the image is displayed correctly, and I can adjust the size with the Tv's remote.

What I see on Dish OTA is as if a 4:3 signal is in "zoom 1" mode always, and there is no way to unzoom it back to 4:3

Anyone else see this? I have tested the output on three different sets, and the results are always the same. I blame a hard coded zoom for 4:3 OTA signals. That should be removed, and let the user select Format mode like other channels.

Major Havoc, having part of the picture cut off can be very frustrating. Thank you for bring this to our attention. I would be delighted to submit this feedback to our Engineer Team for them to look into and see what we can do to get this resolved!

Thanks Sam. I can send images if it would help, and happy to test or try things out if you have questions. Note that it’s 4:3 OTA content that gets zoomed automatically where the issues seems to be.

Hello Dish. This is still broken, and we missed another local alert about fire issues near our home.

This is a serious issue that needs to be fixed immediately. I plan to notify the FCC that your set top is cutting off Energency Broadcast Warnings and you have refused to correct it.

I have been more than patient with this amazingly buggy set top and the lack of fixes to date. But when you risk the safety of me and my family, I take this VERY seriously.

Please have a customer retention representative contact me ASAP to discuss.

Just received and installed my OTA tuner and this problem is still ongoing as described by original poster. I have the Hopper 3 and have tried resizing the OTA on it and on the Joey's and the resizing options are there but do not have any affect on changing the size.

FYI: I have found a workaround because this still is not correctly fixed.

You need to go to any Standard Definition (4:3) channel supplied by DISH satellite (NOT OTA). On one of those channels, you can use the FORMAT button on the remote to rezise that SD channel to the way you want it displayed. One of those modes will shows it with side letterbox and full view of the original 4:3 image.

Now go back to your OTA SD channel. It will be formatted correctly.

It seems that OTA SD channels will use the last format of a Dish SD channel set. This allows me to see the etire image now. It is a pain and they should be able to just make the format button work on OTA SD channels. But this will give you a work around at this time.

Edit: Re-read what you posted about "any" channel...duh! It worked!! Thank you for the tip!

Thanks I will give that a try. However, one of the channels I would like to be able to resize is the sub channel (i.e. 13-1) and there is no equivalent to it on the Dish guide. Maybe even doing this workaround with the main channel 13-0 will also work though so I'll report back if it does. Thanks for the info!

There are any number of SD channels on DIsh's lineup.

Here is what I suggest: Find an SD channle, and press the FORMAT button to select the next FORMAT choice.

Go back to your off-air channel and see how it looks.

Continue this through all the formats avaialble, and find the one that works best.

It does not have to be the correct format for Dish's SD, just the format that you want to use for the OTA channel. For example, you really want zoom, then just zoom the SD Dish channle, and it should stay zoomed when you go back to OTA.

Good luck.
