My $700 Onkyo, overly complex Surround Sound Receiver recently blew up. So, I was faced with the dilema on how to extract theDolby Digital stream from the Hopper 3 to drive my 5.1 Surround Sound amplifiers. The Hopper 3 provides a Doby Digital stream from its Optical output. I found a decoder on Amazon: eSynic 5.1 Decoder DTS / AC3 Dolby SPDIF Input to 5.1-Channel Digital Audio Converter that receives the optical stream from the Hopper, decodes it & sends the analog channels to my amplifiers. Problem solved. Now I have full Surround Sound without a complicated, expensive, failure-prone Surround Sound receiver.
